I am throwing a party! On October 12 at the Quarry Amphitheatre in Santa Cruz, California.
…and it’s going to be a whole lot of fun.
The good people at Noise Pop, a Bay Area production team, have asked me to curate my own festival in cordination with them and I am so pleased to do so.
I’ve picked five of my favorite artists and I couldn’t be more excited about each of them. I will also be playing…and my favorite podcast, How Long Gone, will be MCing the evening. It’s truly going to be ridiculous and silly and great and serious and fun.
Here is who’s playing (besides yours truly):
Jessica Pratt - Jessica is a longtime friend of mine. She, in my opinion, is perhaps the greatest songwriter of my generation. I’m not just saying this but honestly believe it to be true. There is simply no one else like her, or that comes even close. But beyond that - Jessica is someone im honored and very proud to call a great friend. The two of us moved to LA around the same time in 2013 and have been close ever since. Her new album is truly remarkable - which is no surprise as everything she’s ever done is remarkable. Witnessing her live is something to behold.
Youth Lagoon - I only found out about Trevor Powers and his band, Youth Lagoon, when his last album Heaven Is A Junkyard came out in 2022. Seeing “Heaven Is A Junkyard” on the cover of an album really grabbed my attention and the music only amplified that same beauty. I’ve had it on repeat ever since first throwing it on. He’s performing solo and I can’t wait to finally see it live.
Makaya Mccraven - Makaya plays drums on my song A Coat Of Butterflies - though I never met him during the session as he did his drums remote. Makaya is a living legend and I was so honored to have him play on my album and now I am so honored to share the stage with him. I saw him perform most recently at Sky Blue Sky in Cancun where we finally met and his set and personality blew me away.
Ben Kweller - Ben is now a friend of mine, which at times seems surreal. I have been a huge fan of his music since I was 14, which is to say, over 20 years, and still going strong. Ben is an absolute light of a human being and an incredible performer and one of my favorite songwriters. His music has influenced me and so many of my peers in immeasurable ways over the years. I got to finally see him live earlier this year at SXSW and every song is gold. The old ones, the new ones. Just anything he does is absolute gold.
Black Star Kids - Kansas City’s finest. I’ve been admiring Black Star Kids from afar, even though we live in the same city, for the past couple of years and have been so eager to meet them and see them live - and now, I’ll finally get the chance. They fuckin rule and are so inspiring and helping put our city on the map.
How Long Gone - If you know me then you know that I’m a true #Goner, which is to say - I love the podcast How Long Gone, hosted by Jason Stewart and Chris Black. A lot of people like to pigeon hole HLG as a “bro cast” or a comedy podcast. But I actually think they’re brilliant interviewers who pull some of the best interviews I’ve heard in recent years out of their many incredible guests of all different creative backgrounds. I used to hate the pod and they asked me to come on the show three times before I finally agreed and once I went on, I was hooked and now they’re my good friends and I listen almost every single episode. Anyways they’re MCing the whole night which will be very very fun.
So that’s it. I hope you can come! This is a first for me and I’m very very excited.
more soon, always xoxox
