DEMO FOUR: Aznivs home and piano ended up being an absolute god send. A blessing from the songwriting gods, or perhaps, just a blessing from Azniv; letting me into her home where the creative spirit was alive and well.
Over a few hours I learned the song the best I could on her piano, in love with its new feel. I remember at the time thinking it sounded like a pop ballad, something I could hear Lana Del Ray singing, or even something a bit more lo-fi and secret, like my favorite Strokes outtake “I’ll Try Anything Once”.
Comparisons aside, I was happy with the new song and felt the music now matched the somewhat defeated, somewhat hopeful subject matter. I would leave the desert the next day, feeling grateful to have a new song in my back pocket, should I need it. Writing this story now is yet another reminder that the creative spirit is always out there, somewhere, and sometimes you gotta follow the wind to greet it.
What you hear on the album is of course also very different from this final demo, but that’s a different story for a different time.
