After leaving my rental home, my new love song in tow, I knew I wanted to spend a few more days out in the desert but after skimming Air BNB listings nothing looked very inspiring and so I called up my friend Azniv who I knew owned a home somewhere nearby.
Azniv, or as her friends call her, Az, is a fellow musician who makes beautiful records under the moniker Bedouine. We did a short solo tour together in 2018 and have been friends ever since, and I find her music endlessly inspiring. After speaking on the phone she let me know that her house was empty if I wanted to crash for the night, and so I took her up on the offer.
Az’s house turned out to be a mid-century songwriters dream - a complete haven for someone in the midst of working out a song. Quiet and beautiful with an open floor plan, coyotes wandering through the sandy back yard and most importantly, a piano.
I sat down at the piano and began transcribing what I had been working on all day at the other house on my 12 string. As a novice pianist this takes me a lot time and more importantly, patience. But also as a novice, it’s thrilling to transfer a song from one instrument to another, hearing it take on a completely different shape right in front of you.
(heres a pic of me and Az on a walk in Chinatown in LA at some point in 2021)
